Boobs and the lumps in them
photo

So I had a little scare this week.

All week I kept on feeling like I had a gas bubble under my ribs on my right side.  Then on Saturday after I awoke from being asleep on the couch (I raged early for the Penguin Plunge where I jumped into Lake Champlain) I noticed the gas bubble pain again so I felt where it was and it was a lump....in my boob!  Yikes!!

Well Vermont is a great state because since I am a new business owner which means that I don't have much money they will offer me free health insurance.  They have Ladies First which will cover all lady screenings and lady dramas.  You can check out their website at www.healthvermont.gov/prevent/ladies_first/outreach.aspx

So I have this lump and my whole right boob hurts....so I venture off to The Fletcher Allen Breast Care Center.  If you go there....they have been Healthy Hippied so look for the magazine in the waiting area.  I got a mammogram which is really fun....it makes your boobs look funny:)  I want a picture of my boob all schwished just for fun.  Then I had an ultra sound.  They said that they think that I have a tumor made of breast tissue and that it should be no big deal.  If it continues to hurt and or gets bigger I have to go back.  So everyone think of my boobies and send them some love and maybe when I see you, I will flash them for you unless I'm related to you!!!

How I Became the Healthy Hippie
photo

So I decided that I am going to write about my business of being The Healthy Hippie.  It all started at a convention in South Beach.  I went to the convention thinking that I was going to cut off my dreads and do corporate wellness.  Someone said to me, "Taraleigh, you are such a hippie...why don't you make money being a hippie. " Ha!!!  I usually make grilled cheeses to pay for my ticket to a show.  Anyway I went to Langerado after the conference with the intention of  making my career being a hippie.  I got backstage to The Biscuits late night show and there met Jonathan Schwartz.  I was talking about being a Healthy Hippie and gave him my first official, "Healthy Hippie Tip."

I went home and started posting Healthy Hippie Tips on Myspace, The Gathering of the Vibes web board, and also sending one to Jonathan Schwartz everyday.  Nobody really responded to them and then one day I forgot to do one and I got all these messages about where my tip was....one of these messages was from Jonathan Schwartz.  He then told me that he was using my tips on the air.  I wanted to get credit for them so I bought www.healthyhippie.net and designed the site using yahoo small business's website builder.  I then decided that I wanted an online newsletter so I started The Healthy Hippie Weekly.  At this point, I wasn't making any money being the Healthy Hippie and I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do with it, but I knew it was fun and I was giving valuable information to people.

I then decided that I wanted to teach dance at festivals so I came up with The Healthy Hippie Dance Class and sent a proposal to many festivals.  I have never written a proposal before, but I decided to try.  I was passionate about teaching this class and I guess it showed.  I got hired at Gathering of the Vibes, Camp Creek, Wormtown, Phanphest, and Jam Cruise!  I love teaching the class!  I even got Ryan Montbleua, Julie from Depth Quartet, Brock Butler from Perpetual Groove, Dave Halchak, and Rob from U-Melt to play for me.

I made a printed newsletter to hand out at festivals.  It was the Healthy Hippie Festival Edition.  Jeff printed beautiful color copies for me and I handed out about 10,000 copies throughout the summer at festivals such as Gathering of the Vibes, Moe.down, Phanphest, Camp Creek, Wormtown, Stonehendge, Baconfest, Sterling Stage, etc.  I got such a positive response from people.  I even started getting recognized. Hahaha.  I had to shoo the paparazzi away (just kidding).

So what was the next step.  It is now September and I decided I want to do The Healthy Hippie Magazine.  Now I am famous for having an amazing idea and then not doing anything about it.  I used to be very scattered and unorganized.  The wonderful Dan wanted to support me in this and make it happen so he set up business meetings for us to set goals.  It worked!  We got Britt Nemeth and Dave Halchak on board with us.  I am very passionate about this magazine and how it is portrayed.  I want it to be a positive, entertaining, magazine with articles that educate people.  I also wanted the advertisers to be companies that I love and support.

I set out on my sales and marketing campaign.  I wrote personal emails to companies and bands that I loved and told them my experience with them and why I think they would be a perfect fit for the magazine and why our audience would love them.  It worked!  I got a bunch of advertising from such  awesome companies that ranged from jewelry makers to concert promoters to bands to organic teas.  We were so excited because we didn't even have a magazine to show them what we have done in the past.  Everyone trusted us to make a good product. ...and we delivered!  So after 4 months of having the idea of making The Healthy Hippie Magazine it happened!  We even have subscribers!!!....and they subscribed before they even saw the magazine.  How cool is that!

Now we are working on our May/June Issue.  If you would like to advertise with us our media kit is online at www.healthyhippie.net/media_kit .  We can also mail you a hard copy if you email me at taraleigh@healthyhippie.net

I have had people ask me if I'm independently wealthy before and actually, I am completely the opposite.  Right now I have about $20 in my bank account, but I'm not worried.  I am doing what I'm supposed to be doing by educating and helping people doing what I love!  It will all work out.  It always does.  I have a huge amount of faith in the Healthy Hippie and whatever is supposed to happen will.  I also go to tons of festivals.  I always volunteer or work to get in otherwise I could never afford it.  I also sell clothes I made from recycled materials.  So, I get in for free and then make some money selling my clothes.  Not a bad deal:)

Check back on more updates on my business and the magazine!

I am also a Holistic Health Counselor and I can work with you one on one to reach your health and wellness goals.  I will teach you how to eat deliciously, love deliciously, and live deliciously!  Contact me for a free 30 phone consultation!  taraleigh@healthyhippie.net

Entry for January 31, 2008
photo

I have been a little slack on writing my blog.....well pretty much I forgot about writing it.  I bet now you are really happy because I remembered.

Here is a recap from Summer thru Winter....

Went so many music festivals this summer.  I taught the Healthy Hippie Dance Class at Camp Creek, Gathering of the Vibes, Jam Cruise, Wormtown, and Phanphest.  I had the best time ever!

Met CSO Dan and fell in love and moved to Burlington, VT.

Met lots of great friends here in Vermont including Melissa, Mike Gordon, Rachel, The Mitch, Beth, Mike, Laurie, Jeremy, and more.

Met my kindred spirit dancer Miss Nancy and I teach with her at the Movement Center.

I started The Healthy Hippie Magazine!  The Promotional Issue is available in Vermont and beyond!  It was a pretty amazing feat.  I got all the advertising myself!  I had the most amazing team including Dan Weathers (Writer, Associate Editor, CFO, CSO), Britt Nemeth (Associate Editor, Artistic Director, Photography), and Dave Halchak (Associate Editor, Assistant Art Director), and Leanne Pedler (Copywrite Editor).  Without them the magazine would have never happened!  It also wouldn't have happened with out my parents support.  Our writers also play a huge part in the success of the mag.  Thank you Jema, Leanne, Jay, Melissa, CRB, Dan, Erica, Lyndsy, and John.  I would also like to thank our advertisers who took a chance on us!  Thank you Freekbass, State of Mind, Buzz Universe, New Moon, Jeff Bujak, Healthy, Fast, and Cheap, Ryan Montbleau Band, Hooked Productions, Karma Hoops Yoga, Natural Breakdown, Katie Pearlman Band, Delicious Wisdom, Phanphest, Bob and Eileen, Susan Kimball, The Beaded Butterfly, Bee Well Massage, Gypsy Rose, Rock the Earth, DayDream Designs, and Guayaki Yerba Mate.

I have seen such amazing music since moving to Burlington!  Some of my highlights were, Railroad Earth, Yonder Mountain String Band, Hot Buttered Rum, Natural Breakdown, Buzz Universe, U-Melt, Ryan Montbleau Band, Old Silver Band, Honky Tonk Tuesday at Radio Bean, Umphree's McGee, Ratdog, Lotus, Omnious Seapods, Perpetual Groove, Sambatucada, Grippo Funk Band, Retronome 80's Dance Party, The Brew, and so much more!

I went on Jam Cruise!  It was so amazing and I had the best time!  After working and playing hard, it took me along time to recover....I think I'm still recovering and it's Feb!

That is my life super condensed for your pleasure!  I will try to be better at updating my blog.

The next edition will be about money.  Stay tuned!

Stonehenge
Stonehenge was sooooooo fun!  I left on Thursday with Miss Britt and we took our sweet ass time getting there.  We sang lots of songs and ate some veggie bootie, drank some kambucha, and had fun!

We got there and set up the tents and then it was time for some fun.  That night we went on flashlightless hikes in the woods with a cell phone and a boy scout.  I also peed at the same time as 2 other people.  At about 4am I was wondering why everyone was sleeping  because it was so early and then someone yelled at me to go to sleep so I went to sleep.

Friday came and we decided that if someone tells you something is heady run!...or buy 5:)  The music was awesome!  Breadbox, School Bus Yellow, Cliff Street, Bacon, and the Juggling Suns....woohoo!  Katie and I got a huge stick and we were trying to poke Kyle with it while he was playing.  He didn't notice but the captain/foreman did.  He ran up to us, put the stick in his mouth, snapped it in two and threw it at us.  It was so freakin funny!

Saturday was great too!  This day we decided that if you are a hippie you shouldn't put your fingers in your mouth because you are a hippie and you're probably dirty.  Leanne gave me an awesome dress that got me the nickname Hippie Barbie.  I love Hippie Barbie!  I ate some hot italian organic free range chicken  sausages and smacked Rob and Erica with them.  It was sexy:)  That night I sang back up at the campsite jam.  I also made up a song for Richie.....I play your favorite song Foreman!  We can rock it all night long Foreman!  Cause I got love Foreman!  Love sweet love Foreman!  Mellow mood has got me.  I then went back to see the music and BBryan picked me up over his shoulders and threw me on my back.  It hurt, but he's a boyscout so it's cool.  The Suns finished out the night.  Before them Buzz Universe, The Reckoning, Natural Breakdown, and U-Melt played.

Sunday came and to quote myself...."I'm so glad it's Sunday so I don't have to drink anymore."  Those are the words of the Healthy Hippie herself:)

I can't wait for Stonehenge 2008!  Next.....Baconfest!
